This is probably the part of the chain that feels most familiar to you, although we will try to share new insights to help you better understand the impact that energy management and its transformation can have on the end consumer before it reaches our homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-c9dac35a wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"134\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 250 \/ 134;\" width=\"250\" autoplay loop muted src=\"https:\/\/lilaklights.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Post3_gif1.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-2 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#830cc4\"><strong>Table of contents<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:italic;font-weight:100\"><a href=\"#supply-demand\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#supply-demand\">Electricity Supply and Demand in the Power System<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:italic;font-weight:100\"><a href=\"#mix\">The Energy Mix<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:italic;font-weight:100\"><a href=\"#integration\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#integration\">The Integration of Renewables into the Power System<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:italic;font-weight:100\"><a href=\"#solar\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#solar\">Solar PV self-consumption and new challenges for the power system<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"supply-demand\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electricity supply and demand in the power system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lesson number one: in the power system, electricity supply and demand must always be in balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We can\u2019t consume more electricity than power plants are able to produce at any given moment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>And power plants shouldn\u2019t generate much more than the demand that exists at that same moment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, <strong>we consume exactly what is being generated in real time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-06c1fcaf wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"498\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 498 \/ 498;\" width=\"498\" autoplay loop muted src=\"https:\/\/lilaklights.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Post3_gif2.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do we consume energy?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The power system operator (or grid operator) in each country is responsible for making sure that electricity supply and demand move in sync.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How do they do that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly speaking, they rely on the fact that there are fairly stable consumption patterns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over a typical day, the highest peaks usually appear in the evening, when we get home, cook dinner, turn on the TV and lights, charge our devices, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over the week, demand is usually higher on weekdays than at weekends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over the year, the period with the lowest electricity consumption is usually late summer and early autumn, when the days are still long and temperatures are mild.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demand tends to be much higher in winter, when we need more lighting for longer hours and heating during the coldest months. In summer, demand is also high in many countries due to the widespread use of air conditioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All these patterns are essential for the operator to plan ahead and keep supply and demand of electricity in balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"mix\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Energy Mix<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system operator, in charge of the electricity supply, uses these demand patterns to decide how much generation is needed at each moment. As we\u2019ve just said, generation and demand must always match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the energy mix?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electricity supply is made up of different generation technologies. The combination of all these sources is called the energy mix \u2013 the mix of <a href=\"https:\/\/lilaklights.com\/blog\/en\/power-generation-conventional-renewable\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/lilaklights.com\/blog\/en\/power-generation-conventional-renewable\/\">generation technologies<\/a> used in a country or region to meet electricity demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can think of the energy mix as a recipe where each technology is a different ingredient:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In some countries, nuclear power is a major ingredient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In others, renewable energy sources dominate, as long as there is enough installed capacity and suitable conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-c9dac35a wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"270\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 480 \/ 270;\" width=\"480\" autoplay loop muted src=\"https:\/\/lilaklights.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Post3_gif3.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, solar PV tends to play a bigger role in summer and during the daytime, when days are longer and skies are clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Countries are also <a href=\"https:\/\/lilaklights.com\/blog\/en\/power-system-distribution\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/lilaklights.com\/blog\/en\/power-system-distribution\/\">interconnected<\/a> with their neighbours, so it\u2019s possible to import and export electricity. That means your national energy mix doesn\u2019t only depend on domestic power plants, but also on cross-border flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To decide which types of power plants are needed to cover demand, the operator looks at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Peak hours (when demand increases significantly).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Off-peak hours or valley periods (when demand is more stable and low).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conventional generation systems (including hydropower) \u2013 based on the rotational inertia of a generator shaft or very stable technologies like nuclear power \u2013 are well suited to cover demand in a reliable way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also worth mentioning that some technologies, like nuclear, are more flexible than others in terms of location: you can build nuclear plants close to major demand centres or areas of economic interest, while hydropower plants are limited by where suitable water resources exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"integration\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Integrating renewable energy into the power system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this picture has changed a lot in recent decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we\u2019ve become more aware of the negative impacts of conventional fossil-based energy sources, energy policy and investment have shifted to favour renewable energy systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burning coal continuously in thermal power plants, for example, releases large amounts of CO\u2082, which increases global warming and has severe consequences for life on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How are renewable energy sources integrated into the grid?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a response to this, many countries have started to phase out highly polluting generation sources and replace them with renewable energy sources, which are much less harmful to the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the renewable energy sources we saw in the previous post, two stand out today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wind power<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Solar photovoltaic (solar PV)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These two already provide a large share of the energy mix in many countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the United States, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/gridmonitor\/dashboard\/daily_generation_mix\/US48\/US48\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/gridmonitor\/dashboard\/daily_generation_mix\/US48\/US48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) <\/a>provides the following data on the daily electricity generation mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" at <a href=\"https:\/\/dashboard.neso.energy\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/dashboard.neso.energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the UK\u2019s National Energy System Operator (NESO)<\/a>, we can find similar information about its electricity mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"930\" growing share of wind and solar PV in the electricity generation mix is a huge challenge for system operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because, as you\u2019ve probably guessed, <a href=\"https:\/\/lilaklights.com\/blog\/en\/the-duck-curve-curtailment\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/lilaklights.com\/blog\/en\/the-duck-curve-curtailment\/\">the main issue<\/a> with these sources is their high variability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With conventional power plants, we can control their output in a relatively predictable, stable way \u2013 at the end of the day, the rotation of a generator shaft is highly controllable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With wind and solar PV, generation is much harder to predict: it depends on weather conditions and can change quickly, both in total output and in how much each source is contributing to the system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-5d2166b0 self-consumption and new challenges for the power system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another important change is that many households and businesses have started to install their own rooftop solar panels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relatively low cost and ease of installation of solar PV means that many users are choosing solar PV self-consumption: producing part of their own electricity on their roofs and consuming it directly at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their goals are usually:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To be more independent from the grid and potential supply problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To save money and get better economic returns than relying exclusively on grid electricity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this growing solar PV self-consumption also has consequences for the power system:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It changes the shape of demand seen by the grid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It adds more distributed generation connected at low voltage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It increases the need for flexibility in both consumption and generation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of this is driving the sector to talk more and more about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>System flexibility, and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Solutions such as energy storage \u2013 batteries and other technologies that can store electricity when there is surplus generation (for example, on a sunny or windy day) and release it when demand is high or renewable output is low.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ll go deeper into energy storage and these new flexibility solutions in future posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A final thought<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve covered a lot of ground, so
