There can be many reasons for this: the lamp you use for studying in your bedroom has stopped working, you are moving house and need to furnish and light new rooms or, quite simply, you have grown tired of the same lamp sitting in exactly the same place for years.

At this point, you may start considering a cordless lamp for the home and wondering what advantages it offers over a traditional lamp. A wireless lamp provides different features from a conventional mains-powered lamp, and these are worth considering before making a decision. Having a rechargeable lamp can be particularly useful in certain situations, and choosing one does not mean giving up traditional lamps altogether. Both types can easily coexist in the same space.

Contents

Main components of a lamp

Main features of a traditional lamp at home

Main features of a rechargeable battery-powered lamp at home

Comparison of the benefits of a cordless lamp and a traditional lamp

LILAK battery-powered lamps

Frequently asked questions about cordless lamps for the home compared with traditional lamps

Main components of a lamp

Lamps can share a number of components, although their exact configuration varies depending on their design, light source and how they are powered:

Base, stand or fixing system: this is the part that supports or secures the lamp. On floor lamps, the base usually provides stability and weight, while ceiling-mounted and wall-mounted models use different types of fittings.

Arm or neck: on certain designs, this is the structure that connects the base to the light source. It may be adjustable, as with a desk lamp, or take different forms depending on the design.

Lamp holder or socket: this is the fitting into which the bulb is installed on models that use a replaceable light source. Lamps with integrated LEDs may not require this component.

Light source: this is the element that produces the light. It may be a replaceable bulb or an LED module built into the luminaire itself.

Shade or diffuser: depending on the design, these elements help direct, filter or distribute the light. They can be made from materials such as fabric, paper, glass or plastic.

Internal wiring: this consists of insulated electrical conductors that connect the different components inside the lamp.

Switch or control: this is the mechanism used to turn the lamp on and off. It may take the form of a button or touch control built into the body of the lamp or, on some traditional models, be located on the power cable.

Power cable and plug: these are present on models that connect directly to a mains socket by cable. On a rechargeable lamp, the cable may be used only to charge the battery and can often be removed afterwards.

Battery and charging electronics: rechargeable lamps include a battery that allows them to operate temporarily without being connected to the mains, together with the electronics required to manage charging and operation.

Main features of a traditional lamp at home

In this article, by traditional lamp we mean a domestic light fitting designed to operate while connected to mains electricity. Together with other lighting points installed around the home, this type of lamp can be used to illuminate rooms, surfaces or specific areas whenever additional light is needed.

Traditional lamps come in a wide variety of configurations and are valued for their straightforward operation and extensive range of design options.

They have been part of everyday life for many years and their operation is completely familiar to most of us. We choose a lamp mainly according to its design and intended use, find a suitable location close to a plug socket and connect it to the mains. We then switch it on or off depending on our lighting needs.

There are also plenty of design options to choose from depending on how the lamp will be used. If we need a study lamp that allows us to direct the light, for example, we may choose an adjustable desk lamp because its articulated arm gives us greater control over where the light falls. If, on the other hand, we want more static lighting, we can opt for a lamp with a fixed structure.

Main features of a rechargeable battery-powered lamp at home

A rechargeable lamp essentially performs the same basic function as a traditional lamp: providing light where we need it. The main difference compared with a lamp that remains connected to the mains is that it contains a battery, allowing it to operate for a period of time without being continuously plugged into a socket.

Because it does not need a permanent mains connection, a cordless lamp opens up additional possibilities around the home. Most importantly, it can be moved freely from one place to another without depending on the position of a plug socket. If you have a terrace, for example, or your favourite reading spot is in an area without a nearby socket, a battery-powered lamp can be particularly useful.

Another useful situation for a lamp with a rechargeable battery is a loss of mains power. If a power cut occurs, the lamp can continue to provide light as long as its battery has sufficient charge.

However, the fact that a lamp contains a battery does not automatically make it an emergency lighting luminaire in the technical or regulatory sense. Emergency lighting products are subject to specific design and operating requirements. A conventional rechargeable lamp can still be useful as a source of light during a power cut, even if it has not been specifically designed as an emergency luminaire.

Comparison of the benefits of a cordless lamp and a traditional lamp

Both types of lamp can illuminate our homes, which is their primary purpose. The main difference between them is that a wireless lamp includes a battery, allowing it to operate without remaining connected to a mains socket.

This gives you greater freedom when positioning or moving the lamp, allows it to be used in areas where there is no nearby socket and provides a potential source of light during a loss of mains power, provided that the battery has enough charge.

In return, a battery-powered lamp needs to be recharged and has a limited operating time, while a traditional lamp connected to the mains can continue to operate for as long as electricity is available.

Using both types of lamp around the home allows you to take advantage of their different strengths in terms of usability, positioning and design.

Feature

Cordless battery-powered lamp

Traditional lamp

🔌 Power connection

Can operate without remaining continuously connected to a plug socket.

Needs to remain connected to mains electricity while in use.

🔋 Power source

Contains a rechargeable battery that stores the energy needed for operation.

Draws its energy directly from mains electricity.

🚶 Mobility

Can easily be moved from one room to another while the battery has charge.

Its position is limited by the length of the cable and the proximity of a plug socket.

🏠 Freedom of placement

Can be used in areas where there is no nearby socket.

Must normally be positioned close to a socket unless it forms part of a fixed electrical installation.

⏱️ Operating time

Has a limited operating time depending on battery capacity, power consumption and the selected light level.

Can operate continuously while mains electricity is available.

⚡ Use during a power cut

Can continue providing light if the battery has sufficient charge.

Will stop working during a power cut unless an alternative power supply is available.

🔄 Recharging

The battery needs to be recharged periodically.

Does not need recharging while connected to the mains.

🪫 Battery

The battery provides mobility, although its capacity and performance may decrease with use and over time.

Does not normally rely on a battery, so operation is not dependent on its charge level or condition.

🧹 Cable-free use

Can be used without a cable once charged, allowing for a cleaner and more flexible setup.

Normally uses a power cable or a fixed electrical connection.

💡 Typical uses

Particularly useful for supplementary lighting, reading, ambient lighting, terraces or areas without nearby sockets.

Well suited to permanent lighting points and extended use in a fixed location.

🎨 Design and integration

Using the lamp without a cable provides greater freedom when positioning it within different spaces.

Available in a huge range of designs, although placement normally needs to take the power connection into account.

LILAK battery-powered lamps

At LILAK, we are developing lamps with rechargeable batteries that can be used without depending on a continuous mains connection, allowing light to be available wherever it is needed most.

In addition, our lamps include an emergency function that automatically activates the light if the mains power supply fails.

Their design, versatility and suitability for different situations make LILAK lamps an interesting way to bring rechargeable lighting into the home.

Frequently asked questions about cordless lamps for the home compared with traditional lamps

Can you turn any lamp into a cordless lamp?

Not always. A traditional lamp designed to operate from mains electricity cannot simply be turned into a cordless lamp by adding a battery.

To power it from a battery, the power supply must be compatible with the lamp’s electrical characteristics, or its electronics must be suitably adapted. If a lamp designed for mains operation needs to be modified internally, the work must take its electrical and safety requirements into account.

For this reason, if you want a lamp that will regularly be used without a mains connection, it is generally more practical to choose a model specifically designed to run on a battery.

Does anyone make a cordless floor lamp?

Yes. There are various cordless floor lamps with rechargeable batteries that can be used without remaining continuously connected to a plug socket. Their operating time and available light output will depend on the specifications of each model.

Is there a rechargeable desk lamp available?

Yes. There are many desk lamps and rechargeable table lamps with built-in batteries. Depending on the model, they may offer different brightness levels, operating times and charging systems.

See how a cordless lamp for the home compares with a traditional lamp in mobility, battery use, flexibility and power cuts.

[1

post-1503","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sin-categoria
["GET
